Unangan/Unangas Program

Unangan/Unangas programming Further, our staff are Native Unangax, the Indigenous peoples of Aleutian Islands in Alaska. At the most recent Aleut Corporation meeting (Tribal council), it was announced that 29 percent of Unangax live in the Pacific Northwest, more than the population that lives on the Aleutian islands and in Anchorage. As such, a new, priority effort of the organization is to create Unangax cultural programming specifically to engage that population here in the PNW. Cultural nights and Unangax song, dance, and language instruction were launched in January 2024. According to the Alaska Native Center at the University of Alaska, fewer than 100 people currently speak our language, Unangam Tunuu.
